When shopping for jewelry, perhaps you’ve heard the term “jewelry appraisal”. If you are not sure what it means, read on. Appraising is something that you may have to do for your jewelry depending on the circumstances.

What Is a Jewelry Appraisal?

An appraisal is simply a document that states how much a particular piece of jewelry is worth.

If your jewelry is expensive, it is a good idea to have it appraised.

To arrive at a specific figure for the value of your jewelry, the appraiser will look at such things as the condition of the piece, its gemstones and their quality characteristics, the settings and the metals from which they are made.

These are just some of the criteria used in an appraisal, and the examination can get very detailed.

After a close inspection of your jewelry, the appraiser will estimate how much it is worth and will put this value in writing, along with a detailed description of how the appraisal was done.

What Are Appraisals Used For?

Generally, appraisals are done to verify the value of a certain piece of jewelry.

The most common reason to have jewelry appraised is for insurance purposes.

In order to decide on the insurance value and premium for your jewelry, the insurer will require you to present a proof of how much each item is worth.

If your jewelry is stolen, the detailed description in the appraisal will be useful not only for collecting insurance, but also for identifying the jewelry in case it is found.

There are many occasions when you may need a written proof for the value of your jewelry, and an appraisal can come in handy in such cases.

Should I Get My Jewelry Appraised?

Jewelry appraisals can be of great help, and it is always a good idea to have one. This is especially true if your jewelry is expensive.

However, it might not be worth it to pay for an appraisal if your jewelry is very cheap. But if you have a diamond that costs hundreds or thousands of dollars, you should get it appraised.

And if you want to insure your pricy jewelry, which we recommend you do, you cannot do so without an appraisal.

Keep in mind that the store from which you buy your jewelry may appraise it free of charge – all you have to do is ask.

Who Can Appraise My Jewelry?

Jewelry appraisers are usually people who have undergone training in gemology and valuation. Your insurance company may require that your items be appraised by an independent professional appraiser.

When looking for someone to appraise your jewelry, you should check what formal training they have and whether they have been certified by a recognized authority such as the American Society of Appraisers.

Always pay close attention to the reputation of the person you are going to trust with your jewelry.
