The Pros and Cons of Trillion Cut Diamonds

Trillion cut diamonds (also called “trilliant” or “trillian”) are triangle-shaped stones (often with rounded sides), which were created for the first time in the Netherlands. Usually, trillion diamonds are used as accent stones around the center diamond on a piece of jewelry, but they can also be set as the main stone.

In case you are interested in this diamond shape, here are some facts about it that you may find useful.

Trillion Cuts Look Large

Compared to a standard round cut of the same carat, a trillion cut stone will usually look larger.

The reason for this is that trillion diamonds are cut shallow, but at the same time they are wide.

So if the size of your diamond is important to you, you should consider a trillion cut.

However, keep in mind that if your diamond is extremely shallow, it will look big, but it may also have less brilliance as it will not have enough depth to make the reflected light sparkle.

Trillion-Cut Diamonds Are Vulnerable to Chipping

You should be aware that because of their triangular size, trillion cut diamonds are prone to chipping at their pointed ends.

Be especially careful if you happen to handle such a diamond loose.

Nevertheless, if the stone is properly set in its mounting, this potential problem should not be a concern.

The Trillion Cut Is More Difficult to Set

Because of their shape, trillion cuts are more difficult to put into settings compared to other, more standard shapes.

Since this cut is so easy to chip, the person setting the stone needs to be very careful when mounting it.

Due to their sharp edges, trillion cut diamonds need to be put in protective settings specifically designed for them.

Trillion Diamond Rings: Pay Attention to Their Prongs

If you buy a ring with a trillion cut diamond, your stone will need special prongs because of its nonstandard shape.

It is recommended that you have your trillion diamond set in V-prongs, which will wrap the tips of the stone and protect them.

You can always go with standard prongs, but they will not fit as well as V-shaped prongs, and your stone might be at higher risk of chipping.

Trillion Cuts Need Extra Cleaning

If you have a trillion cut diamond, make sure that you clean it regularly. This is true for all stones, but trillion cuts need to be cleaned more often.

Because these cuts are shallow, they have less depth to bend and reflect light compared to deeper cuts (like the round ones).

As a result, their sparkle will be more easily dimmed by even a little dust.

To make sure your trillion-cut diamond doesn’t lose its brilliance, clean it often to enjoy its sparkle.
